Questions US companies ask before their first nearshore hire.
Short answers, grouped. If yours is not here, ask it on the call.
The basics
01What is nearshore staffing?
Nearshore staffing means hiring professionals in countries close to the US, mainly in Latin America, whose working hours overlap with yours. Unlike offshore staffing in Asia or Eastern Europe, your nearshore team works the same day you do.
02What is the difference between nearshore staffing and nearshore recruitment?
Who employs the hire. With staffing, nearshore.now employs the professional in their country and you pay a flat monthly fee. With recruitment, we run the same search and vetting and you hire the person directly, through your own entity, employer of record or contractor agreement, for a one-time fee. We do both, and you pick per role.
03How is nearshore different from offshore?
Time zone. Offshore teams in India, the Philippines or Eastern Europe work while you sleep, so every question waits a day. Nearshore teams in Latin America work while you work: a Bogotá employee shares the full Eastern and Central business day with you. Cost savings are similar; the difference is that collaboration happens in real time.
04Which countries do you hire from?
Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Costa Rica and Guatemala. We pick the country for each role based on the time zone you need, the depth of talent for that role and your budget.
05Which roles can I hire?
Software engineers, product designers, data and analytics, finance and accounting, sales development reps, customer success, executive assistants, marketing and content, recruiters, operations and project managers, legal and compliance, and IT support. If your role is not on the list, ask; the process is the same.
06Can I hire one person, or do I need a team?
One person is fine. Most clients start with one hire and add more once they have seen how it works.
Process and speed
07How fast can I hire?
Most clients meet their first shortlist within a week of the intro call and make an offer within two to three weeks.
08How do you vet candidates?
Torre.ai matches on skills, seniority and English first. Then our team interviews every candidate live, runs a role-specific exercise (code, SQL, a mock sales call, a redline, an inbox triage), tests English in conversation and checks references. You interview the finalists and make the decision.
09Do I interview the candidates?
Yes, always. We send three to five vetted candidates with our notes; you interview the ones you like. We never place someone you have not met.
10What do you need from me to start?
A twenty-minute call. Bring the role, who the person will report to and a budget range. We will tell you on the call whether nearshore is a fit, which countries we would search, and whether staffing or recruitment suits the hire.
Employment, cost and compliance
11Who employs the professional?
With staffing, nearshore.now does, through its local entities and partners, and handles payroll, benefits, taxes and compliance while you direct the day-to-day work. With recruitment, you do, and the professional joins your payroll or your own contractor setup.
12How much does it cost?
Staffing is a flat monthly fee per hire that covers salary, employer costs and our service, typically 40–60% below the fully loaded cost of an equivalent US hire. Recruitment is a one-time fee per hire, and you pay the salary directly. Both depend on the role and seniority; we quote them on the call.
13What is included in the monthly fee?
The professional’s salary and mandatory local benefits, employer taxes and contributions, payroll, a laptop and equipment, HR support and our replacement guarantee. You receive one invoice in US dollars.
14Do you place employees or contractors?
With staffing, full-time employees, employed under local labor law through our entities and partners. Where a country or a candidate calls for a compliant contractor arrangement, we structure it that way and tell you. With recruitment, you choose the arrangement and we tell you what is standard in the country.
15Who owns the work and the intellectual property?
You do. Every placement assigns intellectual property to your company, and the professional works inside your systems and accounts from day one.
16How do you handle confidentiality and security?
A signed NDA and confidentiality terms in every contract, a background check before the start date, equipment we provide, and access that you control in your own systems. Treat a nearshore hire the way you would treat any employee: least-privilege access, MFA, and clean offboarding.
17Can I convert a nearshore hire to a direct employee later?
Usually, yes. Terms depend on tenure and on the country, and we discuss them on the call so there are no surprises later. If you already know you want the hire on your own payroll, use recruitment from the start.
18What if it doesn’t work out?
Every staffing placement includes a replacement guarantee. If a hire isn’t the right fit in the first months, we find a replacement at no additional fee. For recruitment, the guarantee terms are in the search agreement and we go through them on the call.
Working together
19What hours do nearshore hires work?
Your hours. Latin America spans UTC−3 to UTC−6, so most of the region overlaps the entire Eastern and Central business day and six to eight hours of the Pacific day. We match the country to the time zone you need.
20How good is their English?
Fluent, because we test it in a live conversation before anyone reaches your shortlist. For writing roles, an editor scores a writing test. Latin American professionals have worked for US companies for decades; strong English is common, and we screen for it anyway.
21Can I visit my team?
Yes, and it is worth doing. Bogotá and Medellín are three and a half hours from Miami, Monterrey is two hours from Austin, San José is three hours from Miami. Most clients visit once or twice a year.
22What is the relationship with Torre.ai?
nearshore.now is a Torre.ai Staffing Partner. Torre.ai is the AI-powered talent network co-founded by Alexander Torrenegra, and it is the sourcing and matching engine behind every shortlist we send, for staffing and recruitment alike. Our team then vets each candidate by hand.
